Why Science of Yoga exists

Two disciplines, one nervous system

As a neurosurgeon I have spent more than twenty-five years working with the brain, the spine and the nerves — in the operating theatre, and in recovery. What patients ask me most is rarely about surgery. It is about pain, sleep, breath and whether they can move again.

Vayu Pain Relief Center, which I founded in 2019, grew out of that gap. Rehabilitation asks the same question as surgery, only slower: what actually helps this person recover? That led me to yoga — and to studying it seriously rather than casually.

Yoga is not a rival to medicine here. It is the oldest documented set of techniques for working deliberately with attention and breathing, and those are precisely the levers the neuroscience literature keeps pointing to. Science of Yoga exists to read that literature honestly and to separate what is supported from what is only claimed.

My mantra Practise allopathy and naturopathy with discipline. Listen carefully to patients, friends and relatives. Communicate well, and keep up to date with the latest changes in neurosurgery and in yoga as it relates to human anatomy. Dr. Rajashekara Reddy Poreddy

Beyond the clinic

My own research looks at yoga and blood glucose in diabetes, yoga alongside rehabilitation, and the relationship between Indian pooja practice and the nervous system — including work comparing yoga with the anatomy of the neuro system.

Credentials

The training behind the practice

  1. 1998

    Enters clinical practice

Takes up practice as a doctor in neurosurgery and cancer care in Bangalore, working directly with the brain, spine and nerves.

  2. 2019

    Founds Vayu Pain Relief Center

Establishes a rehabilitation-focused centre in Bangalore, working with people recovering from pain and injury.

  3. Present

    Founds Science of Yoga

Turns the reading and research into a public resource — reading the neuroscience literature and reporting only what it supports.

Professional research

What I am studying

Current lines of enquiry, approached the way I was trained to approach any clinical question — carefully, and with an honest account of the limits.

Yoga & blood glucose

Studying yoga as an intervention for blood glucose and diabetes, and where breath-led practice fits alongside medical management.

Yoga & rehabilitation

What structured, repeatable practice can do for recovery — and for the neuro-muscular work that recovery depends on.

Indian culture & the nervous system

Looking at pooja practice, breathwork and traditional technique through the lens of the anatomy of the neuro system.
